Laughter and Tears at Annual Scholars' Celebration Dinner

As always, the ABC of Andover Scholars’ Celebration Dinner began with a delightful slideshow highlighting the fun events of the year and squeals of recognition emanated throughout the log cabin. The scholars seemed so excited to see themselves and connect with enthusiasm to a wonderful year spent together at ABC.

President Susan Connolly offered opening comments that included a recap of the events and milestones that concluded the 50th anniversary and a banner year for the program. ABC of Andover creates a multifaceted scaffolding of care, safety and academic support, and encourages unique choices for each scholar. It is a tribute to the program that these young women leave here not only heading to four-year colleges, but also possessing a deep sense of worthiness and self-sufficiency, a feeling that they can and will succeed anywhere.

Volunteers who want to partner with scholars filled the room, people who open doors of opportunity and provide whatever support they can to their journey. Four years ago, our amazing seniors chose ABC, AHS and the Andover community in which to polish the independence and intelligence that were already within each of them. They were looking for the kind of program that would let them shine, and they found it with ABC of Andover.

Positive energy filled the room as Resident Director, Karen Spinale, shared some of her three-year experiences with the scholars, and as she introduced Marina Williams, one of the Resident Assistants this past year. There was no question that Karen and her staff offered the support needed by the scholars throughout their tenure with ABC. And, after introductions, each young woman graciously thanked all the volunteers for their support, care and love throughout the year.

Academic Advisor Cynthia Marsh had the privilege of then highlighting this year’s seniors, Elise Cabrera and Jenni Nguyen, who are the 141st and 142nd alumni of the program. She remarked on their academic and enrichment achievements and the deep bond they’ve formed with their housemates. The seniors then shared their special gratitude to the volunteers and shout-outs about their housemates, who responded with delight at the inside jokes.

Host families for these seniors included the Allen and Donovan families. Each family shared highlights of memories of Elise and Jenni throughout the years—from first impressions to the evident maturity that evolved as time passed. For example, Yasmine Allen shared that her three sons have enjoyed having Elise as a big sister in their home, and she appreciated being able to compare notes on the “girly stuff” with Elise. Host dad Jorge has also been an advisor to the Diversity Club at Andover High School which Elise has helped guide during these last few years. Next, Dan, Erin, Cate, and Liam Donovan shared their unique and funny experiences of host family home life with Jenni. Good-hearted ribbing over not-so-long walks and favorite shows bounced between Jenni and the Donovan family.

The evening ended with Elise and Olamide leading the scholars in an original rap that showcased some of the scholar experiences throughout the year. Each year, the scholars bring determination, resilience, and courage to the challenges they face and strive for achievements that everyone is happy to celebrate.

And, as the room emptied, a feeling of warmth surrounded everyone.
