ABC scholars spent a busy summer touring colleges, traveling to Europe, honing basketball skills and expanding their horizons in highly selective programs at Fordham, Johns Hopkins, Johnson and Wales and Notre Dame Universities as well as the Eleanor Roosevelt Center and the Harlem’s Children’s Zone.
Senior Felicia Reyes stayed on in Andover where she continued to work at Micro Works Computer Center. She then attended the Career Explorations Summer Program in Business at Johnson & Wales University, Providence, RI. Next up she worked as an ABC Orientation Group Leader for the East Coast at Arcardia University in Glenside, PA. She returned home for the month of August where she focused on summer assignments for the upcoming year’s AP courses.
Junior Abigail Awodele attended University of Notre Dame’s Summer Scholars Program, in South Bend, IN where her focus was on Pre-Med studies. She was awarded a full Scholarship for tuition and airfare. In August Abigail participated in the National ABC College Bus Tour.
Junior Jazzare Mays attended the Johns Hopkins Talented Youth Summer Program at Johns Hopkins in July. She joined Abigail on the ABC College Bus Tour in August.
Deanna Starr, also a junior, worked in a paid position at a community-based program in her hometown through State Youth Employment Program (SYEP) in NY. Deanna also joined her fellow ABCer’s touring college campuses by bus.
Sophomore Xonatia Lee spent 9 days at the Eleanor Roosevelt Center in Val-Kill in Hyde Park, New York participating in a girls leadership development program based on the model pioneered by Eleanor Roosevelt. She also tutored younger students in math in her home community.
Sophomore Ariel Leachman joined the “People to People” abroad program and spent two weeks in Europe (Italy, France, Switzerland and Austria) during the month of July. She also participated in the Summer Reading Program at Fordham University, which helps students develop reading speed, strong comprehension and study skills.
Fatouma Kone, also a sophomore, stayed on in Andover to hone her basketball skills during two sessions of Hooptown Basketball Camp at Andover High School, courtesy of a full scholarship. She also participated in the Peer Achievement Summer Internship Program at the Booker T. Washington Beacon 54 School, Harlem Children’s Zone, New York, where she worked with younger students and learned about ethics, workplace life and money management skills.
